Qualifications:

? Must be 18 years of age
? Good physical condition and dependable transportation
? Good listening skills and communication skills both written and verbal
? Ability to work with a variety of people including those of other races, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
? Ability to maintain confidentiality along with representing the agency in a positive and professional manner
? Must complete the SOS volunteer advocate training, shadow a current helpline advocate (at least one shift) and must complete 6 hours of volunteer in-service annually to remain in active volunteer status

Expectations:

? Be reliable and punctual
? Exhibit a professional attitude and respectful conduct
? Adhere to casual dress code at the shelter
? Promote a work environment that is free from all forms of discrimination and harassment
? Follow work rules and conduct yourself in ways that protect the interests and safety of all employees, volunteers, clients and the SOS agency
? Avoid forming personal, dating and/or business relationships with SOS clients
? Maintain client and co-worker confidentiality even when volunteer experience is completed
? Adhere to agency philosophy, mission, policies and procedures

Position Summary:

? Answer 24 hour helpline during scheduled shift at the shelter
? Record information from calls on “log sheet” and note pad for staff follow-up
? Contact on-call staff or victim advocate to respond to crisis calls, police response calls and hospital calls regarding domestic violence or sexual assault
? Provide practical and emotional support to guests while in shelter
? Do light housekeeping chores and assist shelter manager with additional tasks as needed
? Know and implement plans for security system, fire and weather emergencies
? Enforce “house rules”, secure house nightly and set alarm at 10:00pm
? Complete each scheduled shift or find a replacement if unable to work
? Record activities and sign “log sheets” and “time sheets”
