Description:

Want to make a difference in a kid's life? Are you patient, enthusiastic, and a whiz with improper fractions? If so, volunteer to be a Communities In Schools of Central Texas (CIS) tutor in an elementary, middle or high school during the 2009-2010 school year. You can assist an at-risk student in achieving academic success while also helping to provide a caring and supportive scholastic environment. Tutors may participate in a variety of instructive activities with students, such as completing homework assignments, playing educational games, reading or working on the computer. Tutors may work with a child in subjects such as English, math, science, reading, writing, or any other subject they may be having difficulties with.

CIS tutors are required to commit at least one hour a week - Monday through Friday, during the school day - for the duration of the academic year. Tutors should have good listening and communication skills, and basic knowledge in one or more subject areas. Tutors also must submit two letters of reference and are subject to a background check. Tutors will also undergo an initial interview with a member of the CIS volunteer services staff, and attend a CIS volunteer orientation.

CIS needs tutors in various elementary, middle and high schools in Austin, Hays County (Kyle and Buda), Georgetown, Round Rock and Lockhart school districts.
