Description:
The environment where the volunteers will carry out their activities will be the Botanical Garden of the Natural Reserve, the Natural Reserve itself, the office of the Natural Reserve and the village itself as far as concerned the activities carried out by the Natural Reserve for the public, the tourists and the summer activities.
Geographical, social and economical environment: The local community where the project will take place is the village of Anversa degli Abruzzi in the Abruzzo Region, Italy. Located within the Natural Reserve "Gole del Sagittario" ( Gorges of the Sagittario River), the City Council of Anversa degli Abruzzi, together with the patronage of the WWF ( World Wide Fund for Nature) , is managing the activities as required by Regional Law in order to protect this natural environment. Although the landscape and the location of the project is shaped within a canyon and ranges between 600 and 1500 meters above the sea-leve, good communication and transportation is assured. Anversa degli Abruzzi is connected to Rome and served by bus twice a day. There is a wireless internet access provided by a local internet company as well as ADSL cable internet service. There is late-pub or any other entertainment . The bars stay open until midnight but only in August. During the other months the bars usually close at 8pm., and after that time you won't find any other open facilities, except from the restaurants. The transportation with Sulmona ( small city where it is possible to find pubs , late-bars, ecc..) is ensured by a local bus company, but the last bus from Sulmona to Anversa degli Abruzzi is at 11.25 pm.
The local community is formed by 400 inhabitants and the socio-economic activities are shaped around eco-tourism and seasonal tourism. Trekking, excursions, bird watching are the main activities offered to the visitors . A project of restoring ancient houses of the village has been carried out, with the birth of an association that provides accommodation within old buildings of the village, newly restored, avoiding the construction of new buildings or big hotels in the respect of an eco-friendly local development. The social component of the village is made of a consistent part of aged people, another consistent part of inhabitants who moved to Rome but are coming back for the summer vacations and a strong wave of tourists ,concentrated between July and September. The attractions offered by the Natural Reserve and the overall quality of the life in Anversa degli Abruzzi makes the population raise up to 2000 units in August, that constitutes a high increase if compared to the wintertime stable population number, reaching less than 400 units. The Summer Programme of Anversa degli Abruzzi is full of cultural happenings , street festivals, and other activities proposed by the WWF, the City Council and the Natural Reserve Authority.
" If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer.
The accommodation of the volunteers will be located within an independent house, some of which newly restored by the City Council, the WWF and the Natural Reserve. The restoration was carried out using non-toxic materials, eco-compatible furniture and following the criteria of bio-architecture, thanks to the consultancy of the Faculty of Architecture (University of Pescara). The volunteers will be living at the same time within the village, but with their own private flat and facilities so that privacy and relax will be assured. They will enjoy the magnific view from the houses, facing the rocks of the Sagittario Canyon or the flat just nearby the main square. The natural reserve is located at 10 minutes walk from the main square of the village.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
" Describe what you can offer to volunteers in terms of service and learning opportunities.
Learining Opportunities: The Natural Reserve Gole del Sagittario can offer a tremendous amount of learning opportunities, thanks to the different cooperation initiatives that have been carried out with different subjects: Universities, Institutes for the Study of the Wilde flora and fauna, WWF, local institutions. They will explore a "living laboratory", made up of projects for an environmentally-friendly development, projects for the promotion of eco-tourism , projects for the bio-architecture promotions. Three different EU projects under the "Leader+" budget line are currently ongoing , as well as other national projects for the development of a "Literary Park" based on the life of the Italian Writer Gabriele D'Annunzio. Finally, a 20-year-long experience in environmental education with the WWF will constitute the cultural environment the volunteers will benefit from.
Service: Training and supervision will be assured by the City Council of Anversa degli Abruzzi, that will provide the professional staff currently managing the Natural Reserve at the aim of helping and caring for the volunteers' needs. As far as the logistics, the main services of the village are : 2 bars, 2 mini-markets, post office, chemistry, 24 hours health care service, police station, regular transportation to connect the main towns of the Abruzzo Region and Rome, 4 restaurants serving also pizza and organic food, an overall high quality of life. Note: the water from the tap is absolutely of high quality ( mineral water).
" Please, explain what will be the role of EVS volunteers in the host organisation.
The EVS will be first of all a stimulating partner for the local staff working in the Natural Reserve. Different culture and different point of view will provide an enrichment for the work within the Reserve. The role of the volunteers will be also a strength-point for the development of international tourism. More and more foreigners are approaching the Natural Reserve and an internationalization process of the environment will be surely appreciated.
