Description:

The Apple Corps, a program of Solid Ground, works to reduce hunger, obesity, and poor health in children and families in Seattle and King County through school and community-based efforts. Apple Corps recruits and trains Americorps national service members that are assigned local agencies to empower youth and families with the knowledge and tools to lead healthier lives.

We are looking for Americorps volunteers to conduct Apple Corps’ school-based projects to address the root causes of hunger food insecurity, obesity, and poor health in children and families in Seattle and King County. In the schools, Americorps members will work alongside Public Health nutrition educators from the Seattle Nutrition Action Consortium (SNAC). Each corps member will:

• Provide in-class and out-of-school time nutrition education, physical activities, and wellness promotions at Apple Corps schools and sites;
• Provide resources and technical support to Apple Corps sites to create healthier school and community environments;
• Increase community awareness about the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity and the availability of food assistance programs for children and their families;
• Partner with community programs to implement culturally appropriate nutrition and physical activity initiatives such as family nights, walking clubs, gardening, and cooking classes at targeted elementary schools and community agencies;
• Develop new partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations with schools, community members, and agencies whose missions align with Apple Corps’ focus on food insecurity and low-income communities.
• Maintain program supplies, document project activities and performance measures, and attend meetings as assigned;
• Attend hunger, obesity, and health-related events and conferences to establish relationships with potential community partners

Qualifications:

Bachelor s Degree or a combination of education, volunteer, and work experience that demonstrates ability to perform position duties;

Effective communication and organizational skills;

Ability to work as a team and practice effective relationship-building techniques;

Ability to multi-task and work under pressure;

Ability to work with people from various cultures, ethnicities and races as well as a commitment to challenge institutional racism;

Knowledge of basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook as well as internet research skills;

Experience working with low-income and diverse populations;

Experience working with school-age children;

Comfortable speaking in front of large groups;

Basic cooking skills;


Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of hunger issues, food assistance programs, and/or experience with educational institutions or social service agencies;

Knowledge or strong interest in nutrition, culinary arts, and/or elementary education;

Background in teaching, youth development, or community organizing;

Proficiency in Spanish or another foreign language highly desirable, but not required;

Driver s license and reliable transportation.

Compensation and Benefits:
-Monthly stipend of approx. $950 a month;
