Free Room and Board. And the chance to change the world of homeless youth.
Covenant House Faith Community offers the opportunity for college graduates to serve homeless youth full time at a Covenant House Crisis Center, live in an intentional community with other volunteers, and share in daily prayer/reflection with their community of fellow volunteers. Volunteers serve for 3, 6, or 12 months, 40 hours per week. We are currently accepting applications for our February, June, and September 2010 start dates!
Covenant House Faith Community offers the following opportunities for volunteers:
Service: Covenant House gives hope and healing to homeless youth, providing 24/7 crisis care and on-going support for young people in need of a safe haven. Founded over thirty-five years ago in the Roman Catholic tradition, Covenant House has reached more than one million young people with immediate assistance and the support necessary to transition from a life on the streets to a life with a future. Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to serve homeless youth full time at Covenant House. Most volunteers serve in our Crisis Centers as Resident Advisors, Youth Advisors, or Case Managers; while others may serve in our Rights of Passage program, medical services, outreach, pastoral ministry, administration, or other support positions. Volunteers receive training for their service placement and have regular scheduled shifts at Covenant House.
Community: Community living provides the support and encouragement necessary for individuals to face the daily challenges of serving homeless youth with energy and joy. Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to live in an intentional community, sharing a house with other Faith Community volunteers.
Volunteers are beautifully diverse and range in age from recent college graduates to those in retirement. Typically 4 to 6 people live in each house. All volunteers share household responsibilities and participate in community activities and leadership. Volunteers accept the challenge of living simple, respectful, and healthy lifestyles.
Prayer/Reflection: Prayer/reflection can deepen our understanding of the value of serving others, can give us insight into our personal faith or life journeys, and can be a source of strength for each day. Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to share time in prayer/reflection together as a community for 30 minutes per day, six days per week. Silence or quiet meditation are integrated into this time. People of all or no faith backgrounds and religious traditions are welcomed and respected. Prayer/reflection comes from the heart of the community - that is, the hearts of all those who are gathered together.
