Description:
This volunteer requires patience and the ability to listen as well as to teach.
We need a volunteer who can build on the existing knowledge of some staff members in a range of technological issues including Network Configuration, Network security, Database design & admin, IT support, Computer hardware & Installation, Web Design & Graphic Design. This will greatly benefit a rapidly growing NGO.
Everything that is taught and fully grasped by a hand ful of staff members will go on to benefit many more people as these staff then lead training sessions for community members. This means the volunteer will directly be contributing to community development. Improving our IT skills will also aid community development by improving service delivery and networking.
The length of volunteer placement will depend on the abilities of the volunteer and time restrictions on both the volunteer and participating NGO staff. Those volunteers who can commit for longer will have an advantage as they will have more time to cover all the technological issues until the staff are fully familiar with it themselves. Having said that, short term volunteers should not be discouraged.
We expect that the volunteer is qualified in some of these areas and has some experience of teaching. Those volunteers who have had experience of working wih people from a different culture and through a language barrier will have an advantage, although this is not essential.
The direction of the 'course' that the volunteer devises and follows will very much depend on the specific needs of the participating staff which is why this role does not just require a teacher, but also someone who can listen and respond to specific technological needs on an ad-hoc basis.
Applicants who can demonstrate an interest and understanding of migrant issues and Burmese issues are prefered.
Unfortunately we are unable to financially support our volunteers however we do support them in finding accommodation and orientating them around the area, projects and staff.
Accommodation in the area ranges from 2500 Baht (very very basic) to 10,000. The usual is around 6000 Baht and may include air con and hot water. A motorbike costs around 3000 Baht a month and food is around 100-200 Baht a day.
