Description:

Position: English Resource Volunteer with Save the Earth Cambodia

Battambang, Cambodia

VIA is now accepting applications for an English Resource Volunteer Position based in Battambang, Cambodia. Save the Earth Cambodia (STEC) works to empower Cambodian people to reduce their risk to disaster, create awareness of gender issues and support women, and build healthy and environmentally friendly communities.

About STEC
Save The Earth Cambodia (STEC) was established in November 2006 in response to the need for local capacity building in the Battambang Province and for leadership in promoting Climate Change issues and mitigation strategies and Disaster Risk Reduction in Cambodia. STEC is a non-government, non-profit, neutral, non-racial, non-religious, and non-political organization. STEC does not support any political party or its candidates.

About VIA
Founded in 1963 at Stanford University, VIA is an independent, non-sectarian non-profit organization dedicated to increasing understanding between the US and Asia through public service and cultural exchange. We provide US residents with volunteer opportunities in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, where volunteers may teach English or work with a local non-profit. On the US side, we bring Asian students from top universities in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China to Stanford where they learn about American culture, public service, and healthcare. More information is available at www.viaprograms.org.

Expectations of the Volunteer
STEC expects the volunteer to serve as an integral part of a small team. The volunteer would be asked to fill organizational gaps and contribute to capacity building according to their skills and interests. The volunteer would report directly to STEC’s Management Advisor. The volunteer may be asked to:

• Assist in financial management, IT and overall communications
• Provide support and advice on advocacy and networking strategies
• Assist in preparation and implementation of the fundraising plan
• Assist in report writing and developing position papers
• Assist in identifying stakeholders and synthesizing their perspectives
• Assist with press releases and media requests
• Build capacity in English language (through teaching) and communication, research skills, and knowledge of gender equity, climate change, and disaster risk reduction
• Provide support for programming issues

Requirements
• BA/BS from an accredited university
• Native English fluency
• Ability to write project proposals and reports
• Some experience or knowledge of gender equity
• Cross-cultural awareness

Finances
This is a volunteer position. The volunteer has to get her or himself over to Asia, and VIA has a participation fee of $2000; VIA no longer has financial aid available. In turn, the volunteer would receive a monthly stipend of $200, a monthly housing allowance of $100, ongoing language study, a one-year visa, medical and evacuation insurance, non-monetary support, and a return flight to the US for up to $1000 after completing a year of service. The cost of living in Battambang is quite low. More detailed information about finances is available at www.viaprograms.org.

Start Date
Ideally we would like the volunteer to join VIA’s training in Phnom Penh which is already underway. If possible, we would like the volunteer to start with the post on September 1, or as soon after as possible. Position is open until filled.
