Description:
Be A Writing Coach—Help Teens Succeed
“It's the most satisfying work I've done in the schools!”
Do you dream of an East Bay where every high school student graduates with the ability to write clearly and confidently? You can help make this dream a reality! WriterCoach Connection (WCC) is now recruiting volunteers to serve as writing coaches to middle and high school students in Oakland, Berkeley and Albany. For a small investment of time—no more than 2 hours per week, a few weeks per month—you can help students succeed!
A program of the nonprofit Community Alliance for Learning, WCC pairs trained volunteer writing coaches with students to work on classroom writing assignments. In 25-30 minute sessions, coaches work one-on-one with every student in the class, at all levels of achievement. Coaches provide individual feedback, reinforce teacher lessons, and engage, encourage and challenge students to develop and express their own ideas. And, our partner teachers say, "the writing improves dramatically."
Now entering our tenth school year, WCC is excited to have expanded to Oakland with a successful pilot program last year. We are returning to the same high school this year and planning to expand while continuing our WCC programs in Berkeley and Albany.
Best of all, you don't have to be a writer, editor or teacher! WCC provides the hands-on training and support you'll need to be a terrific writing coach. Learn step-by-step methods to mentor students, including your own, at one of our trainings in Berkeley or Oakland.
