Description:
Iridescent is a science education nonprofit organization that has been operating for 3 years. We train engineers and scientists to develop and teach hands-on science courses on complex, Physics-based concepts to underserved families. You can learn more about us at www.IridescentLearning.org
So far we have been devoting our energies to developing a strong, scalable, innovative model. We now need help publicizing our approach and increasing our visibility.
The SMR intern will conceive and execute media relations initiatives, blogger and social media outreach programs, guerrilla marketing concepts, and other media/communications efforts to build awareness of, and acquire customers for Iridescent.
SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES
PR and Promotions
• Develop and maintain media relationships with the nonprofit press, and local media channels, liaising with Iridescent’s team to identify new projects.
• Contact nonprofit/education panels that we could be invited to.
• Contact local TV /radio stations, USC's Daily Trojan and Trojan Network.
• Contact minority organizations that could help spread the word about us.
• Write articles for the above venues
Blog and Social Media Tools
• Grow awareness through contemporary tools: develop relationships with notable nonprofit bloggers and blog influencers, increase awareness of brand and create grass roots buzz/conversations; contribute and execute new ideas for the social media program.
• Maintain day-to-day media monitoring (blogs and mainstream media) to identify new venues for increasing Iridescent’s visibility.
• You will also be expected to help broaden media coverage through building/maintaining relationships with nonprofit and education bloggers and related websites that could link to us.
Sponsorships / Advertising
• Identify and manage appropriate sponsorships and targeted advertising.
• Contact local engineering corporations and identify potential partnerships/sponsorships.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES
• We are looking for outgoing, confident, brave, persistent risk-takers who do not take no for an answer.
• The ideal candidate would have strong writing skills and a sophisticated vocabulary.
• The role requires an in-depth knowledge of traditional public and earned media relations, public affairs, social media/grass roots marketing, blogger outreach, and issues management.
• Experience in developing and implementing short and long term media, guerrilla marketing and public relations plans.
• Strong interest/background/experience in nonprofits and urban education
• A Bachelors Degree in Public Relations, Marketing or a related field is desirable
• High comfort level with all sorts of technology tools
• A high level of energy, commitment, and passion for results
• The ability to work to urgent deadlines and juggle multiple high-priority tasks
• An attention to detail and desire to establish and maintain the highest standards
• The ability to communicate and influence at all levels
• An ability to develop and maintain networks and relationships
• Proven success and demonstrated creative abilities in the development and implementation of successful communication programs
• Excellent communications skills: written, oral and presentation
• Extensive media relations skills and experience
• Demonstrable multi-media competency
• Advanced advertising/design/marketing skills and experience
• Well developed internal communications capabilities
