Description:
The Chechnya Advocacy Network strives to provide comprehensive integration services to all newly arrived refugees and other migrants from the North Caucasus, especially through matching them with volunteer "buddies" and specialized organizations. Although the numbers of new arrivals to the US are relatively low, they require a range of services and integration assistance that is often not provided by government agencies or community-based organizations. Education and language training are high on the list of needs we try to meet.
At this time, fall 2009, we are looking for volunteers in the tri-state area (NJ and NY's outer boroughs) who can engage with North Caucasus children in the kindergarten to elementary school age range. The families we are working with are single mothers with advanced educational backgrounds who take great interest in their children's educational progress and well-being, and greatly appreciate any assistance they are given. Volunteer tutors should be able to meet with children on a regular basis and engage them in playful language acquisition and/or provide more structured homework help, depending on the child's needs and age. Experience in education, child care, after school activities, tutoring etc. is welcome, but not required.
Opportunities to get involved with the Chechnya Advocacy Network beyond tutoring are available as well.
