Food Folks: Nutrition Education Program
The Food Folks nutrition education curriculum consists of 12 hands-on lessons. Geared towards children ages 5 to 12, each one-hour lesson includes information on basic nutrition concepts, the hands-on preparation of a healthy snack, a learning activity and physical activity that reinforce the nutrition concepts of the lesson.
At Children’s Hunger Alliance, the Food Folks program helps champion the mission of the agency to break the cycle of childhood hunger. AmeriCorps National Service Members teach the Food Folks curriculum to children attending after-school and summer programs locally in Montgomery County.
CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Childhood Health)
CATCH is designed for elementary to middle school-aged children. The program consists of 20 lessons, usually completed in 10 weeks at two (2) lessons per week. The activities involve everyone in the program, and there are “no winners or losers”.
The hour-long lesson consists of warm-up, physical fitness, physical activity, and cool down sessions. It is our goal to engage the kids for the entire hour, stressing to the kids that it is okay to move at their own pace.
This program is designed to assess the benefit of a school-based intervention to promote healthy behaviors in school children and reduce their subsequent risk of cardiovascular disease.
Volunteers help us make these programs a success in a variety of ways including: helping to prepare snacks, joining in on games and serving as good role models for the children.
Our programs are currently running from January 11, 2010 through March 31, 2010.
