Description:
Urban Mindfulness is seeking a "virtual" intern to help maintain, develop, and promote the on-line offerings of our organization. We are group of people (all mental health professionals) dedicated to the practice of mindfulness and compassion in urban settings. We seek to bring bring these meditative practices "beyond the cushion" into daily city life through every digital means necessary (e.g., active blog, downloadable handouts, Google calendar, Facebook page, etc.).
Responsibilities
* Develop social networking presence (through Facebook, Twitter, Ning, etc.)
* Edit blog posts by our contributors
* Upload posts to our web host
* Update and maintain meditation calendar
* Conduct research on mindfulness- and meditation-related websites, blogs, products, organizations, etc.
* Minor website management (occasionally updating the static pages and content)
* Assistance with grant writing
* Read and comment on mindfulness-related blogs as a representative of UM
* Review mindfulness- and meditation-related resources for Urban Mindfulness blog (e.g., how good are the iPhone meditation Apps?)
* Other duties as assigned
Requirements
* College Degree (or close to completion)
* Interest in mindfulness and meditation. Personal contemplative practice is preferred, but not required.
* Residence in urban setting (given that the duties are conducted on-line, the intern does not have to be in NYC, where our organization is located)
* Commitment to staying in position until end of 2010
* Knowledge of and familiarity with social networking, blogging, etc. (e.g., know the difference between a Fan Page and a Group Page on Facebook)
* Strong editing and writing skills
* Strong organizational skills
Ideal Candidate
* Familiarity with Joomla programming and/or WordPress blog management
* NYC-based (so we could meet face-to-face periodically)
* Hard-working
* Optimistic (but not naive)
Our ideal candidate is someone who is energetic, hopeful, and passionate about bringing real change into the world. Ideally, this person is excited about transforming the way that we experience life (and each other) as city dwellers by engaging with the people and environment around us. This person believes that it is possible to revolutionize the way that we exist in the world through connecting with the people and environment around us. And, he or she is very saavy with computers and social networking resources. The intern will be working independently with periodic meetings with our Founding Director, Dr. Jonathan Kaplan. These meetings can be in-person or by phone depending on where the intern lives. The hourly commitment is anticipated to be about 4 - 8 hours a week.
