Is there a way to donate a used wireless phone?

Summary:

Here are some links with advice about programs for re-using cell phones.

Answer:

The Wireless Foundation has links to many local programs at http://www.wirelessfoundation.org/12give/index.cfm

The webpage also encourages people with extra phones just to send them to:
CALL to PROTECT
c/o Motorola
1580 E. Ellsworth Road
Ann Arbor, MI 48108

Phones donated to this program are refurbished, reprogrammed, and made available to victims of domestic abuse who can use them to call for assistance if help is needed.

There is also Pledge-A-Phone (http://www.pledgeaphone.com). This firm helps support groups that do domestic violence protection, cancer research, drug rehabilitation, suicide prevention, children's medical research, children's support services, after school programs, animal protection groups and environmental groups. It helps raise funds through phone donations. Pledge a phone designs in-house and online cell-phone drives. Call John Perez at 888.259.4860 for more info.

Thanks to Thomas Bruein of California for suggesting we should provide information about such programs and to John Perez for the description of Pledge-a-Phone. Posted 11/10/00; revised 9/12/01 -- PB
