Is there a toll-free phone number for the I.R.S.?

Summary:

Yes. And there are other ways to get information from the IRS as well.

Answer:

The I.R.S. toll-free number for tax-exempt organizations is 877-829-5500. On the Internet, the IRS has a page that links to many resources at http://www.irs.gov/charities/. The more general toll-free number is (800)829-3676 and the overall WWW address is http://www.irs.gov.

Navigate Your Way to the Exempt Organizations Products and Services You Need -- Find out about specialized IRS products and services for exempt organizations in the new (October 2007) publication, The Exempt Organizations Products & Services Navigator -- http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4630.pdf.

The IRS has downloadable copies of many the forms and publications online. All the Exempt Organizations (nonprofits) forms and instructions are offered in several formats in one place. See http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/index.html

The IRS website has been frequently cited as one of the best online publications anywhere (!).

You can also order forms and informational publications by calling 800-TAXFORM (800-829-3676).

Cheri Smithson - Board/Staff Helpline at the Nonprofit Resource Center supplied the new 877 number in January 1999. Revised and updated 8/2/99; 1/6/05; 10/19/07. -- PB
