Record Turnout for MLK Day of ServiceAccording to MLKDay.gov this January 19th was the largest Martin Luther King Day of Service ever, with over 12,000 service projects registered on the site. The holiday was deemed "a day on, not a day off" by the United States Congress in 1994, and since then has been a rallying point for community service agencies, the national service movement, and now, newly inaugurated President Barack Obama, whose call to service inspired record turnouts at projects across the country. If you participated in a service project and you want to share your story, go to usaservice.org where you can submit photos and words, or record audio describing the contributions you made. (The word cloud to the right is made up of the most common words in the stories submitted to the site so far.) At Idealist, our vision is for a world where all people can live free and dignified lives, and where anyone who wants to help another can do so. We are working towards that vision every day of the year, and we are inspired by the many thousands of Idealist members around the world who have used this site to connect with others and to find opportunities to share their time, energy, and talents. Thank you. |
