The Student Safety Coalition represents organizations that are concerned about the Bloomberg Administration’s increasing reliance on the Police Department to enforce discipline and maintain security in our schools. We believe that students are entitled to attend schools that are not only safe, but also hospitable to a positive and respectful learning environment. While the vast majority of school safety agents act in a professional manner, an excessive police presence in the schools, including the use of zero tolerance police tactics, too often creates a hostile environment and undermines the nurturing environment that is essential to learning. As a coalition we are principally concerned with ensuring the success of all New York City students. Our organizations support passage of the Student Safety Act as an important first step in ensuring oversight over police practices in New York City schools.
