Activism Networks
Date: March 5, 4:50am
Hello group,
I'm a newbie soon to be relocating from London to SF and I'm v interested in continuing to work for social change locally, nationally, and globally. Can anyone point me towards a great organization or network that focuses on progressive ideas related to greens, women's issues, racial justice, etc... I'm looking to meet people and discuss how I can help in SF. (Also, it would be nice to have a chat with SF peoples! I'm in London and missing home!) Take care, Georgie

RE: Activism Networks - League of Women Voters
Date: April 10, 1:44pm
It may not be seen as radical, but the League of Women Voters is effective and is one of the only groups in SF to offer succinct, fair, non-partisan election information. They aren't just rich old white women. I've been a member for 6 years and currently serve on the State board - I am proof that they train, promote, and respect new members. Membership is open to men and women of all ages. They act at the local, regional, state and national level, but given your environmental interests, the Bay Area League may be the one you'd be most interested in.
You can join locally and you automatically become a member of all of them: http://lwvsf.org/pages/join.html San Francisco: http://www.lwvsf.org (tends to focus on basic voter education and good government) Bay Area: http://www.lwvbayarea.org/ (tends to focus on transportation, water, and other enviro issues) California: http://www.lwvc.org (all over the map, but currently focused on voter education, redistricting, health care, education, the CA budget crisis) National: http://www.lwv.org (all over the map, but currently focused on campaign finance, civil liberties, DC voting rights, election administration, ethics and lobbying reform, global climate change, health care, and tax reform) Let me know if you have questions or want me to take you to a local event. The Leadership Council workshops are open to the public and members can watch the plenary sessions: http://ca.lwv.org/lwvc/aboutlwvc/council/2008/index.html |
