What are you reading?
Date: March 20, 4:01pm
Hi there everyone!
Seeking to become more informed about these issues, I recently read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver (which I thought was wonderful,) and I'm currently reading The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Do other members of this group have recommendations of books, articles, films, etc that deal with issues of food, farming, and sustainability? I would love to hear them! -Anne

Hi Anne, That's great that you're taking initiative to learn about these issues. Pollan is definitely a must-read. He also has a new book called "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto." I also recommend Peter Singer's book, "The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter." Other important authors are Eric Schlosser and Marion Nestle. And for a global perspective, I recommend Vandana Shiva.
Some good films to see are Super Size Me and The Meatrix (an animated twist on "The Matrix," and very funny!). A very good, recent article in the New York Times: Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler by Mark Bittman. Organizations' websites are an excellent source of the most up-to-date information. If you have been following the beef recall, you should check out the website for The Humane Society of the United States. Other informative websites include Grist, Sustainable Table, and Food & Water Watch. Since you're in NY, you should check out Just Food's CSA Conference in Manhattan on March 29. Should be very interesting! |
