Graduate programs can help pay anywhere from a small portion to all of your graduate expenses. This will depend upon a program's scholarship set-up and your ability to compete for that money. Some have highly competitive graduate assistantship positions that will pay for it all, but at a cost of working 20 hours a week for the program. A great deal when you can get it. Others may offer merit scholarships that range from hefty to light.
No matter the funding amount you receive, also check into federal assistance via loans. And remember that many times graduate programs offer waivers of out-of-state tuition, so take your pick nationally. Don't necessarily limit your option by what you think you can afford or will like. Two years for a strong, nationally recognized program is really no time at all since you'll be working/learning. Open up your localities and your mind; ask questions of lots of schools. Narrow by what you hear, not on your assumptions. So, do your research early, apply on time, and be in touch with your programs to get your foot in the door. Those looking for careers in public and international service/affairs should check out Texas A&M University, the Bush School of Government and Public Service. We have great scholarships and ALL our students pay resident rates, amounting to just over $10K a year. Average scholarships are $4-5K, with many getting double that. Not a bad deal when going into the service fields! Find more at http://bush.tamu.edu or call me at 979-862-3476. I'll be glad to talk of your qualifications and possibilities. I just wanted to add that in addition to the Peace Corps if you do AmeriCorps for a year you can also use the education award you receive to go to grad school. There is a list of schools that will match the award either 1:1 or much more. So if you are reluctant to join peacecorps and you live in the US, you might want to consider it as a way to gain job experience and finance grad school.
