Welcome! Over the last twelve years, with the help of people from all over the world, Idealist has become one of the most popular online resources for nonprofit and community organizations and the people they serve.

Why use Idealist?

Idealist enables organizations to enter and update information about their mission, services, volunteer opportunities, internships, campaigns, upcoming events, and any resource they have produced. All this is free for any organization.

Idealist is visited by over 50,000 people every day, with an average of 10,000,000 page-views every month. In addition to appearing on our website, subscribers to our Email Alerts may receive an email with listings posted by your organization that match their interests, location, and other specified criteria.

Idealist job listings

In addition to the free services listed above, organizations in the United States can post their job openings for only $60 per listing. Job postings from organizations based outside the United States are free.

Listings are viewable and searchable on the site immediately after they are created. Furthermore, subscribers to our Email Alerts may receive an email that includes listings posted by your organization that match their preferences.

Is Idealist for you?

Idealist is for you if you are a staff or board member at a nonprofit organization or NGO. Idealist does not currently serve politicians, candidates for office, for-profit schools, or most government agencies. For the complete list of the kinds of organizations that can be listed on Idealist please see our Help Section.

To be listed in Idealist, organizations must agree not to engage in violent or illegal action, or in any action against others on the basis of age, gender, race, nationality, origin, religion, sexual orientation, or physical or mental ability.

If you have any questions about whether your organization should be in Idealist, please contact us here.

Since advertising on Idealist, my client-base has grown substantially. Idealist allows me to directly reach organizations that understand how important quality, and not just quantity, really is. I recommend Idealist to all my colleagues who want to reach a higher-caliber audience.

Mary Ellen Kennel, New York

I was at your latest Idealist career fair, representing Visions in Action, and I mentioned to your staff that we found a great computer consultant on Idealist. Just want to say thanks for this new service. We have really benefited from our new consultant!

Annabel Khouri, Visions in Action, Washington, DC

I just spoke with one of your organizations, who advertised the need for a newsletter designer on Idealist, and I was very pleasantly surprised to be chosen for the project. It's a great service you are providing!

Does your company or organization belong here?

This directory is for consultants, freelancers, companies and organizations that provide services to the nonprofit community, and for vendors that sell products designed specifically for nonprofits, such as software, books and emergency equipment.

It is not meant to include any of the following:

  • Generic products that organizations can buy anywhere.
  • Fund-raising "plans" that are based on nonprofits selling or promoting a product or service and taking a percentage from its sale.
  • Resumes of people seeking full-time employment.
  • Nonprofit organizations that are not primarily engaged in providing consulting services to other nonprofits. (In this case, your organization is welcome to join our nonprofit directory.)

Please note that if your listing falls under any of these categories, it will be deleted immediately.

How much does it cost?

The cost for a listing is only $50 for six months or $95 for a year. This subscription entitles you to:

  • An entry on Idealist, which you can update at any time.
  • The ability to post internships and events, for you or for your clients, at no extra cost.
  • The ability to post jobs on Idealist, for you or for your clients, and reach tens of thousands of nonprofit job seekers, for only $60 per posting.

The application process

Registration on this directory is not automatic, and as with all the content in Idealist, we reserve the right to decline any entry. The application process consists of the following steps:

  1. Please read these brief terms of use, and make sure you agree with them.
  2. Create a profile on Idealist, describing the services that you offer to nonprofits/NGOs.
  3. An Idealist staff person will be notified of your application, will review it, and will get back to you within two working days. In some cases, additional information may be requested.
  4. When your application is approved, you will receive an email inviting you to log in, pay for your six-month or annual subscription (using VISA, Mastercard, or American Express), and start using Idealist.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact us here.

Add your Idealist Group:

Thanks for listing your group on Idealist! Idealist Groups are created by people who want to share ideas and resources, get involved in local or global communities, and help create opportunities for others to be involved. They are based on a common location, interest, affinity, or profession.

Idealist Groups can be large or small, local or global, and they can meet face-to-face or work mainly online, but all of them share the following traits:

  1. They are part of a global network of people with a shared vision to help build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives.
  2. They uphold some basic rules among their members (no violent or illegal action, and no action against any person or group based on who they are).
  3. They can be started by one person or by a group of people.
  4. They can be initiated on Idealist, or simply serve as an online space for a previously existing group.
  5. They can post events, campaigns, volunteer opportunities, and resources on Idealist.
  6. They can be used to gauge interest and gather support for starting a new organization or project.

If you have a question about any of this, please see our Help section or contact us here.

Otherwise, if you are ready to list your Idealist Group, we look forward to seeing your application.
