Description:
“The Earth’s Climate and Future: Women Decisions and Actions”
To the People of the World,
We, the Women Environmental and Climate Action Network (WECAN) are writing to you on the occasion of the forthcoming climate policy decision, the important of our times. The resolution that are negotiated in Bonn and all the other meetings leading to Copenhagen and in Copenhagen in December 2009, will determine the climate of our planet and with it the case of numerous people worldwide especially in developing countries and mostly vulnerable people and communities.
If global climate change is to be halted and all related disasters avoided, then concrete, far-reaching actions/measures must be put be place. Our key goal must be to a substantial and rapid decrease in human-made greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions of Annex I countries. For this purpose, top priority and urgent actions must be taken especially within the sector of energy production and the protection, preservation and conservation of ancient forest.
Energy production using fossils fuels and nuclear power is not sustainable; that is why Women are calling for the greatest and innovative possible development of renewable energy sources worldwide. Existing ancient forest of the Amazon and Congo Basins, play a vital role for both the earth’s climate, as large carbon sinks and for the global biodiversity, as unique habitats. Logging, burning and other deforestation practices with ancient forest must not be tolerated under any circumstances, whether for animal husbandry purposes or for agro-fuels.
We are calling upon decision makers worldwide and at all levels, not to put the short-sighted, market driven quest for profit by large business corporation above the interest of women, children, youth and other vulnerable groups and communities worldwide.
What ever targets that have been put together can only be achieved if all countries and people stand together united, with industrial countries accepting responsibilities of their historic role in bringing about climate change and enabling developing countries and newly industrialized countries to develop through low-carbon and green economic models.
For this to happen, industrialized countries must be ready to cooperate and supply the necessary technical and financial support needed.
Saving the Earth’s climate requires legally binding and rigorous agreement on climate change at the COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 2009. Key elements of this agreement must include the following;
• A reduction of GHGs emissions by at least 40% by the year 2020 in developed countries as compare with the 1990 levels and to virtual zero worldwide by 2050
• Commitment of funds of about 30 billion Euros to stop the destruction of ancient forests especially the Amazon and Congo Basin Forest
• To save the earth’s climate and protect humans and other species from these consequences, developed countries must provide a sum of 110 billion Euros (140 billion USD) per year for adaptation and mitigation measures for developing countries especially funding to execute the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPAs) of Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
During the recent economic crises, we have all witnessed how much money has been made available by many developed countries to bail our banks. We the women of the world now want to see such actions and commitments to save the earth’s climate for the benefit of all from the current climate crises.
Dear Decision Makers and other Key Stakeholders in the climate change arena. Please note that the future of the world’s people does lie in your hands and what ever decisions you take in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009 would affect them either negatively (if the wrong decisions are reached) or positively (if the right decisions are reached).
The Women of the World are counting on you to do all it takes to reach the right decisions, so that we can all live in a healthy, green and low-carbon planet earth, far from the pollutions created during the fossil fuel industrial revolution.
Let us now strive for a Green and Low-Carbon Industrial Revolution of the 21st Century.
Sincerely yours,
Rosemary Olive Mbone Enie
