Description:

This 500-level hands-on course provides an ideal learning environment to develop your capacity in Net Zero Energy building design. Net Zero Building Design 501: Building Envelope & Internal Load Optimization, part of the NEXUS Net Zero Energy Education Program, will support the Building Design Phase Process of the building through:

-Introduction to Net Zero Energy and its definitions based on energy boundaries, case studies of buildings that have achieved (or trying to achieve) these goals, research publications, and lessons learned in Net Zero Energy building design.

-Development of site plan to make best use of building orientation and daylighting strategies using studies such as shadow analysis, daylighting analysis and thermal study for form/shape and orientation decision-making. Effect of interior room surface reflectance, shading and daylighting penetration will be studied.

-Evaluation of building envelope components and develop thermal specifications including vertical fenestration and skylights using daylighting and thermal analyses; opaque assemblies such as roofs, above-grade walls, floors, opaque doors and slab-on-grade floors using envelope thermal studies.

-Evaluation of building internal loads for electrical lighting, infiltration, ventilation, occupancy, receptacle loads, and process and other loads.

-Real-life exercises in how to use software tools to implement building envelope and internal load optimization: Ecotect, Radiance, and Trace 700.

This meeting is for:

Architects, Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Students, and others interested in zero-energy building design
