Description:
As Water Team Coordinator you will be in charge of managing the construction of CasaSito's water tanks in rural villages. The coordinator gets involved with all aspects of the program, from fund-raising to recruiting volunteers to supervising the work. It’s kind of like a condensed Peace Corps job. For that reason a working knowledge of Spanish is required (or take about 3 weeks to learn it here) as is the motivation to fundraise for 2 tanks prior to starting your on-the-ground work ($1500 total).
Before you begin your work in a village, you must familiarize yourself with the community and form a relationship with the Village Water Project Coordinator. You must maintain communication between CasaSito and the Water Committee or Village Committee ensuring that we are aware of what's going on in the village concerning water development throughout your entire time as Water Team Coordinator.
The work constructing the water tank begins by analyzing who qualifies and selecting a family to receive a water tank. Then you must organize 2-5 volunteers who are willing to get their hands dirty for a week while building the tank. You will also be responsible for making sure that the volunteers helping you with the project are well looked after and receive sufficient information before each construction date concerning where to meet, what exactly the work will entail etc. During the construction, you must oversee and participate in building the tank. Throughout the process you will also in charge of making sure all the accounting is done and the receipts are in place.
To carry out your job effectively and efficiently you will need to be a responsible and patient individual. Being in charge of a project like this requires determination, dedication and most definitely quite an extroverted personality as you need to make new friends within the community and have the confidence to make a different set of volunteers each time feel comfortable and at ease. No previous experience in construction is needed but is certainly beneficial. For the moment a good knowledge of Spanish is necessary. Most of all you need to be interested in making a difference in people's lives and be willing to put people's needs before your own.
This internship pays a partial stipend. CasaSito will cover your expenses while you are working in the rural village, including hotel, food, water, and travel expenses. However, how often you are in the rural village depends on how many tanks we are able to fundraise for. Therefore, it is recommended that you fundraise for tank construction and an increased salary before you arrive in Guatemala.
