Description:

As a medical volunteer you will be part of a team professionals at Central Regional Hospital or Elmina District Hospital in the Cape Coast area of Ghana. Based on your interests and academic background, you will be assigned to a medical team (general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery or dentistry). You will observe and assist the team in ward rounds, OPD duties, surgery in the operating theater, and public health outreach, depending on your placement.

The Intern

We are looking for medical students currently enrolled in medical school, and who want the challenge of working in the developing world. We require a two-week commitment, but internships can last much longer. Students should be open-minded and have a sense of adventure. The healthcare system in Ghana can be daunting, and interns are expected to adapt to this challenging environment.

* Dentistry
* Surgery
* Pediatrics
* OBGYN
* Nursing
* Physio therapy

There are also opportunities to organise public education and outreach for the facility in AIDS education and public health.

Through this placement volunteers will learn and develop their medical skills (specifically in tropical medicine), and gain a broader insight into the realities of healthcare and everyday life in the developing world, and in Ghana specifically.

Objectives of the placement

• Assist staff from the Ministry of Health (MOH) in their clinical duties.
• Foster skill transfer between the interns and the MOH.
• Foster greater understanding among interns about healthcare issues faced in Ghana and in West Africa.
• Help to create partnerships between MOH and local civic groups, NGOs and diplomatic missions.

Accommodation
All interns are housed in the Abusua Foundation house, located on the University of Cape Coast campus. Breakfast and dinner are provided at the house, 7 days a week. Rooms hold 1-2 people and the house shares 4 bathrooms. There is a communal kitchen, living area and terrace.

Hours
Working hours are 8:30am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, unless otherwise specified.

Fees:
All interns are provided with airport pick-up/drop-off, orientation in Cape Coast, 24/7 Emergency support, daily food (breakfast and dinner) and accommodation for $120 a week. For placements less than 6 weeks there is a flat fee of $720.

Deposit:
There is a $300 non-refundable deposit to secure the placement, which is due 30 days after acceptance by the programme. The rest of the programme fee is due 30 days before your arrival in Ghana.
