Description:

FIMRC is delighted to announce its 3rd annual Summer International Health Fellowship (SIHF) program in Peru! SIHF is a four-week immersion and service program designed for students interested in medical professions, which provides an intensive daily clinical experience while becoming an integrated part of an underserved community. Fellows will be based at FIMRC’s partnering hospital in Huancayo, a city located in the central highlands of Peru. During their stay, Fellows will learn about the Peruvian medical system in substantial depth by forming relationships with healthcare providers and patients alike. Please see www.fimrc.org/fellowship for more information.

Fellows will spend their days in a hospital shadowing physicians and performing rotations alongside Peruvian medical students. They will also be given the opportunity to interact with patients on a daily basis and scrub in on surgeries. For more information on our projects in Peru, please visit http://fimrc.org/projects/project-peru.

Fellows will also help implement public health campaigns and preventative medicine initiatives in close collaboration with FIMRC on-site staff. Fellows will travel to community centers in the city, as well as rural towns in the Peruvian highlands to promote community health initiatives. In doing so, they will teach populations in remote areas how to avoid the most common preventable illnesses. Fellows will present lessons both to children and adults, based on the current needs of the communities.

In contrast to FIMRC’s shorter programs (most of our other participants travel for 1 or 2 week volunteer missions), the SIHF program’s immersive nature gives students a chance to form lasting relationships and view an underserved population from within. Fellows will also have the opportunity to improve their Spanish ability through their interactions with local residents, though Spanish proficiency is not required to participate.

SIHF is open to all interested individuals, but is designed especially for undergraduate students and recent graduates interested in medical professions. Our aim is to provide Fellows not only a valuable experience for their resumes and medical school applications, but to expand their perspectives for their future careers.

Fellows will be housed together with a host family in Huancayo, where they will be provided three home-cooked Peruvian meals a day. FIMRC staff will meet Fellows at the Lima airport upon their arrival and accompany them to their fellowship site. Private drivers are hired to provide all transportation within Huancayo.

The costs for the Summer International Health Fellowship include a per-week program fee, as well as costs for housing, meals, and transportation. SIHF rates are significantly discounted from FIMRC’s standard per-week rates in order to make our program more financially accessible.

The program will be divided into two 4-week sessions. Please contact us directly if you would like to participate but are not able to travel during the exact session dates, as we are able to work with you to tailor your trip dates. If you would like to travel for longer than 4 weeks, please contact our office.

Session I: June 6 – July 4
Session II: July 4 – August 1
