Description:

Democracy Now! is an award-winning, non-commercial, daily radio/TV news hour. Pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S. and broadcasting on over 800 stations, we are one of the fastest growing programs in public broadcasting.

We are looking for an intern for the following position for winter/spring 2010.

General information:We require a minimum of two months commitment, for 15-20 hours per week. Positions are based in our downtown Manhattan office. Internships are unpaid,but academic credit can be arranged. A lunch stipend is provided.

Position Overview

Internship Job Description:
The Outreach, Community Organizing / Visibility Intern will assist Democracy Now! outreach staff in coordinating efforts to increase awareness about the Democracy Now! TV and radio broadcasts in the NYC area as well as around the US.

Duties:

• Communicate with Democracy Now! supporters and activists via email,phone and in person
• Help develop, produce and disseminate publicity materials
• Research outreach opportunities in NYC and coordinate logistics to enable Democracy Now! volunteers to engage in these opportunities
• Respond to first contacts from volunteers who are interested in outreach
• Contribute to ongoing effort to improve communication with volunteers and activists
• Foster alliance-building and networking amongst Democracy Now!supporters and other like-minded groups and organizations
• Help create systems for logging and evaluating visibility activities

Qualifications:
• Interest in/understanding of issues of independent media, media reform,and social and economic justice
• Experience with grassroots organizing and activism
• Familiarity with Democracy Now!
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative, as well as be apart of a team
• Ability to multitask effectively
• Familiarity with MS Word and internet research a must; experience with Mac computers, MS Excel, Filemaker Pro and Photoshop a plus
