Description:
NLC’s Center for Research and Innovation provides undergraduate and/or graduate students with an opportunity to work on a wide variety of local government policy issues including: housing, sustainability, taxation, international relations, immigration, transportation, telecommunications, community and economic development, healthcare, public safety and many others. NLC involves interns in substantive projects that include research and oral and written communications components. Additionally, interns are fully incorporated into the NLC staff to learn the value of teamwork in an office environment and how to work with other professionals on a daily basis to complete a task.
Duties include:
• Researching local government policy issues and innovative practices;
• Writing for the weekly newspaper, the NLC website, and other related news and information resources;
• Assisting with surveys;
• Attending meetings or briefings and reporting back to staff; and
• Providing administrative support as needed.
Highly qualified candidates should be approaching or in their final year of undergraduate education or enrolled in an advanced degree program. Excellent oral and written communications skills are required along with strong organizational skills and an interest in government, public policy or related fields.
These unpaid internships run the full length of the academic semester. Work hours are generally at least 25 hours per week.
