Description:

"Watching America (WatchingAmerica.com) is an internationally renowned website that translates foreign news about the U.S. from all over the world, to enable Americans to see how they and their policies are perceived globally. Over its five years of existence, it has gained mainstream recognition in the U.S. and abroad and has been talked about, among others, by the BBC, NPR, Foreign Policy Magazine, The Guardian and The Village Voice. It depends on a team of volunteers who benefit from the prestige of the project in developing their careers elsewhere, and who have a passion for the idea of breaking down the final barrier among peoples of the world - the language barrier."

Watching America (www.watchingamerica.com <http://www.watchingamerica.com> ) is currently looking for full editor interns. Potential candidates must have excellent English skills in order to edit and proofread translated articles from the United States. While candidates do not need prior editing/proofreading experience, candidates must demonstrate a strong ability to edit and proofread accurately. We find that the most successful candidates are avid readers. Candidates will manage, mostly over email, a group of up to 30 volunteer translators professionally and effectively. Candidates must be able to work five days a week, for about an hour a day, for a minimum of nine months. They must be willing to communicate on a daily basis with the publisher (Robin Koerner), the senior editor (Adair Fincher), the other editors and proofreaders, and with various translators outside their translator group if need be.

Example of Potential Duties:
-Edit/Proofread according to AP style guidelines.
-Communicate (usually via email) with various members of the Watching America team.
-Manage a group of up to 30 translators, acting as their “go-to” editor. Management includes communicating quickly and effectively with translators, sending individual translators articles to be translated and ensuring that translators hit their translation quota.
-Find articles for translation.

Watching America is a “virtual” project. Accordingly, editing and proofreading can be done from anywhere in the world. While this is an unpaid internship, it allows for flexibility in regards to when an editor works, helps build resumes and comes with the offer of a solid letter of recommendation from Robin Koerner. Further, if a candidate is chosen to become an editor, there is opportunity, pending ability and commitment, for possible growth within the organization.

Application instructions:

Send cover letter and resume to Robin Koerner (robink@watchingamerica.com) if interested.
