Description:

Christopher House, a five-site family resource center on Chicago’s north side, helps people overcome and avoid the consequences of poverty to build families that thrive. Through a continuum of education programs Christopher House helps families become self-sufficient and resilient.

Christopher House’s Youth Development Services includes (among other programs) Youth Tutoring and the GEAR UP/Teen REACH college and career program. Both programs will break the cycle of poverty by providing youth with the skills to succeed academically and thus pursue post-secondary education.

Responsibilities
The AmeriCorps Tutoring Coordinator will be responsible for piloting a new tutoring program at our Logan Square family resource center (ages 5 – 12) and the Avondale GEAR-UP/Teen REACH program (ages 12 – 18) to assure that students are paired with tutors for homework help and skill-building and that tutoring sessions run smoothly.

- Recruit, screen, train and supervise tutors
- Organize tutor and parent trainings, as needed
- Coordinate special events including volunteer recognition
- Recruit and build relationships with community partners
- Work with schools and teachers to gather student grades
- Assist tutors in assessing students’ strengths and weaknesses and setting goals
- Work with tutors to develop age-appropriate math and reading lesson plans for each student
- Organize and maintain tutoring resources and supplies
- See to adequate space for tutoring sessions
- Supervise tutoring sessions
- Complete data entry and record-keeping as indicated by program design and funder requirements



Additional Qualifications:

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Self-Motivation, innovation and problem-solving skills
- General computer skills
- Understanding of volunteer service and service-learning
- Leadership experience (prior supervisory experience preferred)
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Deep commitment to fairness of opportunity and helping youth succeed
