Joining New York Restoration Project’s AmeriCorps team is a way to put your idealism into action. Becoming an AmeriCorps member enables you to do great things for your community; you will gain the personal satisfaction of taking on a challenge and seeing results.

We are seeking to fill 1 full-time AmeriCorps position to start in November 2009 for an 11-month term of service.

Mission
NYRP carries out founder Bette Midler’s dream of a cleaner, more beautiful New York City. NYRP restores, develops, and revitalizes underserved parks, community gardens, and open space in all five boroughs. We invest in the communities we serve by providing ongoing maintenance and enriching educational and public programming; because we believe that every individual has the right to a beautiful neighborhood and the responsibility for contributing to its care.

Job Description
Community Outreach is central to fulfilling NYRP’s mission of endowing current and future generations of New Yorkers with a beautiful, more livable city. NYRP can only fulfill this mission by partnering with: state and local government, state and local agencies, local elected officials, community boards, block associations, community based organizations, and the millions of New Yorkers who visit parks, gardens and walk cleaner greener streets. By sharing our vision with our many partners, NYRP has transformed parks, vacant lots and former dumping grounds into valued community assets. As NYRP nears its 15 year anniversary, it is necessary to foster and strengthen ties with our many community partners.
The Community Outreach AmeriCorps member will assist the Community Outreach Manager in all outreach duties including: promoting public access to gardens; establishing contacts with schools, community groups, and local leaders; developing and conducting outreach for community based programs; assisting with community programs and volunteer days as needed; facilitating communication between community gardeners, NYRP field crews, and NYRP office staff; assisting community gardeners in obtaining goods and services from NYRP; and any other tasks that best serve the communities we work within.

Bilingual English-Spanish language skills are required.

The Community Outreach AmeriCorps member must be available to work a full-time schedule—that is 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

AmeriCorps Benefits
• Earn a living stipend of $1,400 per month
• Put current student loans into forbearance during your term of service
• Individual health insurance
• Earn an education award of $4,725 to help pay for college, graduate school, vocational school or to repay student loans
