Description:

Rice Production in Maswa District, Tanzania and its Contribution to Poverty Alleviation
By Jerry A. Ngailo, Abuid L. Kaswamila & Catherine J. Senkoro

This report examines the role of rice production in poverty alleviation, with comparison to other farming activities, in particular producing crops of maize and cotton.

Gross Margin analysed carried out for these three major crops grown in the Maswa District of the Shinyanga Region have shown that rice occupied a superior position to other crops in terms of its contribution to the welfare of the poor households. Income from rice provided poor farmers with the financial capability to purchase goods and services such as ploughs, pay school fees, medical services, etc. However rice production relied heavily on rainfall and the availability of suitable land.
