BAM presented its first performance in 1861 and began operations in its present building in 1908. The Academy is a not-for-profit institution that has grown into a model urban arts center focused on both international issues in the arts and local community needs. The Brooklyn Academy of Music has a world-wide reputation as a leader in terms of artistic innovation.
