Mission:
The Cojolya Association of Mayan Women Weavers is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the ancient art of backstrap loom weaving and the traditions which surround it -- not just as a historic relic, but as a viable enterprise. The Cojolya Association offers a way for these skilled artisans to make a living wage with the production of their magnificent textiles. Cojolya Association is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
The Cojolya Association provides materials, infrastructure, design direction and market development to the women who weave. The women weave in their homes, including the weaving as a part of their daily routines, in the tradition of their grandmothers.
Cojolya Association also works to improve the health of its workers and the environment by
distributing ONIL stoves and water filters to our weavers and the community at large through its social program. These projects are funded by donations earmarked for this purpose.
Cojolya also runs an informative weaving museum alongside its shop in Santiago Atitlan. This offers weaving tours and classes, which help to subsidize Cojolya's work. As does its new online shopping page accessible through its website: www.cojolya.org.
