Mission:
Established in 1999, UTEC provides a safe and multicultural place of belonging emphasizing the holistic development of Lowell's young people, ages 13-20, particularly those most often overlooked and labeled as "at-risk." UTEC reaches out to these young people through intensive street outreach, builds upon their unique strengths within a youth development framework, and creates opportunities to best support them in becoming organizers in their community and leaders in their own personal lives. UTEC serves over 100 youth daily and over 1,000 youth throughout the year.
Overall, our core values focus on peace, positivity, and empowerment. We pride ourselves in our roles as peacemakers between all youth. We always provide a variety of positive creative outlets for our young people. And we value the concept of empowering young people to best draw upon their talents as organizers of our community.
UTEC's programming falls under 4 main centers: Street Outreach (crisis intervention and gang peacemaking), Youth Development (sports/recreation, cultural and performing arts), The Open School (GED preparation and multimedia work skills training for out-of-school youth), and Youth Organizing (focusing on grassroots systemic change campaigns).
