Description:

The legal department was established based on the needs of the women in the community and works on four levels:

Advising individuals—On the individual level, Kayan provides advising to women who have difficulties gaining access to appropriate legal advice. Lack of accessibility is caused by the individual’s own lack of economic resources and knowledge of their rights in addition to language barriers. Often, women need to contend with issues relating to their personal lives, mainly those related to the areas of marital and economic rights. The advice that is provided by Kayan is characterized by a personal attitude and intimacy that is an outcome of Kayan’s analysis and understanding of the patriarchal social structure of society that brought these women to their situation. The relationship is based on empowerment-oriented service, not just a professional relationship.

Gathering information and data—The department gathers data and documents their findings on rights violations of women and girls (sexual and domestic violence, mandatory education, employment and human rights). Kayan uses the evidence found and the concerns expressed by women in its projects to advocate for advancement in equal rights of Arab women according to the law.

Advocacy among the authorities—The information collected by Kayan is published and transmitted to enforcement authorities, legal and legislative authorities.

Lecturing and advocacy in the community—Acquiring knowledge and empowerment—
Publishing materials concerning legal rights for the community and lecturing to raise awareness of legal rights in order to advance access to legal justice.
