The Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign (AHAC) is a grass-roots organization that places volunteer practitioners at homeless shelters and transitional housing sites to provide alternative therapies (e.g., massage, naturopathy, acupuncture, homeopathy) to the homeless in Seattle. AHAC’s mission is to promote quality health care to those who otherwise have no access to alternative health care.
Over 4000 treatments have been provided to 1500 patients, 47% of whom have returned for further treatment. We currently offer these clinical services at 5 sites in the King County area, incuding Tent City, Compass Cascade Women's Center, Angeline's Day Center for Homeless Women, Frye Apartments and Roots Young Adult Center.
We do this by:
1. Coordinating & developing direct service programs providing alternative healthcare options.
2. Providing information & support to practitioners, activists, members of the homeless & low-income communities, and others who share our mission of increasing access to alternative care.
3. Tracking and compiling research on the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of alternative health care advocates for appropriate healthcare public policy.
AHAC is a membership-driven organization. Members are the lifeblood and essential spirit of the organization. The membership includes all active volunteers, including site volunteers, practitioners and committee volunteers. The members meet biannually to elect the steering committee members and resolve fundamental issues facing AHAC.
