Description:

Mercy Education Project is a doorway to the future for girls and women who live in southwest Detroit, one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. MEP’s mission is to help participants achieve self-respect and self-sufficiency through academic services and life skills education. MEP provides after-school one-on-one remedial tutoring and other activities to girls in 1st through 8th grades in a single gender, warm environment. MEP’s Women’s Educational Services program provides basic literacy, individualized GED preparation, and job skills training. A volunteer is needed to teach, tutor, plan, document, and implement educational and career exploratory activities, support community networking and partnerships, and assist with marketing and development efforts.

While serving full-time for 1 year at this site, volunteers also commit to living a simple and spiritual lifestyle in community with other volunteers.

Volunteers are provided with:

• housing

• transportation (vehicle or public transit pass)

• food stipend

• medical insurance

• personal stipend ($100/month)

• orientations and retreats

• spiritual direction (if desired)

• support from the Sisters and Associates of Mercy as well as MVC alumni in the local community

The service year begins in early August and extends through the following July. The ending date of the yearlong commitment varies according to site and regional needs, but typically falls between July 15th and 31st. Volunteers may choose to renew for a second year.
