Our Lady of Guadalupe Middle School is an independent, Catholic middle school in the Nativity-Miguel model. The school is dedicated to educating young women in grades 6, 7, and 8 at a critical juncture in their lives. The school provides an extended day, extended school week, and program of support after graduation. It is a full-scholarship school. OLG is located in southwest Detroit, a densely populated immigrant neighborhood that is growing quickly. A volunteer is needed to work as a member of the extended program team, coaching a sports team, leading a club of her/his choice, supervising a study hall, lunch and recess, tutoring, and chaperoning a monthly “Super Saturday” field trip.

While serving full-time for 1 year at this site, volunteers also commit to living a simple and spiritual lifestyle in community with other volunteers.

Volunteers are provided with:

• housing

• transportation (vehicle or public transit pass)

• food stipend

• medical insurance

• personal stipend ($100/month)

• orientations and retreats

• spiritual direction (if desired)

• support from the Sisters and Associates of Mercy as well as MVC alumni in the local community

The service year begins in early August and extends through the following July. The ending date of the yearlong commitment varies according to site and regional needs, but typically falls between July 15th and 31st. Volunteers may choose to renew for a second year.
