Description:

Become an AmeriCorps*VISTA Member with Miami-Dade College!

The mission of Miami Dade College's (MDC) Center for Community Involvement is to (1) promote and support the ethic of service among students, faculty, and staff of MDC and (2) connect the extensive resources of MDC to the greater community. The Center coordinates all placement and ongoing support and holds continuous training sessions for faculty and for community agency volunteer supervisors who host the college's service-learning students. Our VISTA members will help us expand service-learning to a new MDC Campus and help us improve the quality and effectiveness of service-learning at a 2nd campus. The VISTA will help locate and establish community partnerships, help faculty integrate service into their courses, and help place and support hundreds of service-learning students to address unmet needs in the northern sections of Miami-Dade County. The VISTA wills serve on the CCI College-wide management team and will help improve and guide MDC's efforts to engage its students, faculty, and institutional resources to improve South Florida. This project will allow us to make tremendous strides in the areas of collaboration, partnership, and community transformation and will help Miami Dade College serve the community like never before. Miami Dade College is the nation's largest and most diverse institution of higher education serving more than 150,000 students annually via 8 campuses.

Our VISTA will help improve and expand service-learning at MDC. He/she will: become an expert in service-learning as a teaching/learning strategy, identify needs in the community and create partnerships with non-profit agencies that meet those needs, guide dozens of faculty in how they can get their students involved in the community via service-learning, and help place and support hundreds of students from two MDC campuses in the community. The VISTA will be an integral part of MDC's Center for Community Involvement management team and help us improve our program and more effectively address issues such as student apathy, lack of civic engagement, and the myriad issues related to poverty in one of America's largest, most diverse, and most dynamic urban settings.

The FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative is a service program that aims to empower students through volunteerism and service-learning to create positive change in our communities. VISTA members earn benefits, including a living allowance, health insurance, student loan forbearance, and a $4,725 education award to apply toward tuition, student loans, or future graduate studies. Applicants from out of state are eligible for a relocation allowance.
