Description:
Computers for Youth (CFY), is a national non-profit organization with an office in Philadelphia, and the leader in improving the home learning environment for pre-adolescents from low-income families. We select public schools with high poverty statistics and then offer all the sixth graders and their parents a free computer-based home learning center, which they are taught to use at our Saturday Family Learning Workshops before taking it home. CFY targets sixth grade so that we can intervene just as children’s disengagement from family and school begins.
Our home learning centers come with award-winning educational software and tailored web content. Our supplementary programs increase parental involvement in their children’s education and train teachers to strengthen the home-school connection. CFY has become one of the largest non-profits of its kind; last year we served our 10,000th student since beginning operations in 1999. CFY has also begun drawing upon its programmatic experience and research findings to influence policy at the local and national level. For more information, please visit www.cfy.org.
To successfully complete our Saturday Family Learning Workshops, we are in need of volunteers to assist our technical and program staff on Friday afternoon prior to our workshop and also on a Saturday at the workshop itself. Volunteers should enjoy working with Middle School students and their parents, and will be required to do the following:
• Assist the Program Staff in classrooms at the Saturday Family Learning Workshop.
• Assist the Technology Coordinator in setting up classrooms to conduct our Family Learning Workshop on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
• For Technical Volunteers, you must be able to lift 30 lbs.
How to Apply:
To volunteer, please contact:
1. Medina Rashid – Director – (267) 231-5564 or mrashid@cfy.org
