Description:
This role consists of working with a local staff to manage two vegetable gardens and caring for a few animals such as cows, pigs, rabbits and chicken.
The gardens are essential in providing food for the orphans and a source of income for running the organization. Tasks include preparing soil, planting crops, weeding and watering the crops. Volunteers will also be involved in selecting crops, supervising workers and teaching children basic gardening skills. Volunteers will work with local workers and gain increase experience in growing local staple crops such as corn, beans, sweet potatoes, vegetable and fruits.
The volunteer will also assist in managing and increasing the animal stock held by the orphanage including rabbits, cow and poultry. Additionally, the volunteer will assist in the beautification of the orphanage to improve its appearance and provide good play/rest areas.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Basic to advanced gardening & animal husbandry skills would be an advantage, self-motivation, good communication skills, willingness to learn and participate in tasks.
Both male and female are welcome.
LOCATION OF THE PROGRAM
The program is located at Maragwa approximately 70 kilometers from Nairobi, however volunteers will be able to visit other projects in other parts of Kenya.
DURATION OF THE PROGRAM
The duration depends on the volunteer’s availability and travel arrangements. We accept volunteers both short-term, 2-4 weeks and long-term, 1- 3 months. For volunteers wanting to travel, we are able to assist with providing information.
PROGRAM FEE
US$90 per week payable prior or at the start of the placement. The program fee covers your meals, accommodation, orientation & supervision.
FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION
Food & accommodation are provided as part of the program.
AIR TICKET AND TRAVEL COSTS
Volunteers are required to purchase their own airline tickets.
AIRPORT TRANSFERS
A representative of the program will meet you at the airport upon arrival.
PERSONAL EXPENSES
internet, telephone, countryside travels, gift items, amenities etc. are available at a little fee
