Description:
Calcutta House exists to serve the most fragile persons with AIDS and to support the self-empowerment of each person to live, rather than to give up on life. Every person receives help to progress toward his/her potential and to achieve attainable and realistic goals. Flexibility is a must and a valid driver's license is preferable.
A volunteer is needed to assist in a variety of ways, including engaging residents in recreational and therapeutic activities, assisting administrative staff, and helping with kitchen and household needs. A volunteer is also needed to assist nursing staff in direct care, including personal care, cleaning residents' rooms, and accompanying residents to doctors appointments. Certification as CNA is required for direct care workers.
While serving full-time for 1 year at this site, volunteers also commit to living a simple and spiritual lifestyle in community with other volunteers.
Volunteers are provided with:
• housing
• transportation (vehicle or public transit pass)
• food stipend
• medical insurance
• personal stipend ($100/month)
• orientations and retreats
• spiritual direction (if desired)
• support from the Sisters and Associates of Mercy as well as MVC alumni in the local community
The service year begins in early August and extends through the following July. The ending date of the yearlong commitment varies according to site and regional needs, but typically falls between July 15th and 31st. Volunteers may choose to renew for a second year.
