Description:

Democracia USA is a national non-partisan civic engagement organization that works to increase the prominence and participation of Hispanics in the political process through Empowerment, Leadership Training, Civic Participation and Community Organizing. We believe it is time that Hispanics make our voice heard and earn the respect we deserve as contributing members of this society. In previous years Democracia USA has surpassed all expectations adding 72,000 new voters in 2004 and 105,000 new voters in 2006. According to an Associated Press story by Erin Texeira dated November 1, 2006, Democracia USA generated 70% of all new third-party voter registrations in the Hispanic commy, making us the second largest third-party voter registration program in the country. This will provide great opportunities to get experience working on a national political mobilization campaign.

Community service opportunities:

Citizenship coaching – We help residents prepare for their citizenship exam. We provide the coaches the material and training necessary to help participants become comfortable with answering the exam questions in English. The exam involves four parts; civics, speaking, reading, and writing English. We provide two coaching session a week on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Coaches will need to tell us in advance of when they are available; though we are flexible about attendance.

ESL Classes – We are planning to provide English as a second language lessons free of charge to community at large. These are still in the planning stage but we welcome anyone interested in being a teacher’s assistant, helping to organize lessons, help during class, and/or give individual tutoring.

Organizing and Advocacy – We work in oppressed and underrepresented communities to mobilize their members to fight for their rights and for representation. Our projects involve everything from registering new voters, collecting signatures, organizing community and educational events, and visiting elected officials. We encourage volunteers to get involved in all levels of planning and execution of these projects. Hours are flexible but they do require a certain amount of dedication and follow through. Our community is depending on us.
