Description:
The Tanzanian Children's Fund works in partnership with Rift Valley Children's Village, an orphanage for 41 children founded in 2003 by American India Howell. The Children's Village is located in Oldeani Village, a remote, impoverished village in Karatu District in the northern highlands of Tanzania.
General Helpers/Short Term Volunteers: Our short-term volunteers live on site and assist our Tanzanian housemothers in the daily care of our 41 orphaned children. Volunteers help with our educational programs, structured play time, meals and bath time. A three week stay is the minimum requirement and we limit our volunteers to a six week maximum stay.
Fees include $130 per week room and board, $120 residence permit costs, $10 a week internet fee, and a $100 administrative fee. Volunteers are responsible for all of their costs associated with travel. All general helper volunteers must be 21 years of age or older, or 12 years and older and traveling with a responsible adult.
Teachers/Long Term Volunteers:
Our long term volunteer positions are for 6 months to one year and coincide with the Tanzanian school year (January- June, and July-November). Our long term volunteers live on site, are required to be 26 years of age or older, and to have at least three years of professional work experience. Our volunteers run our education programs including; teaching at the local primary school, tutoring, running our on-site preschool program, as well as running our computer and English class for primary school graduates. Since our long term volunteers are responsible for these programs, a background in education and/or teaching English as a second language is preferable. Long term volunteers also mentor our short term volunteers and assist in the daily care of our 41 orphans.
