Description:

At the moment, there are just two Ghanaian speech and language therapists to attend to the needs of over 22 million Ghanaians. What’s more, these two therapists will be retiring soon without any notice as to when their replacements will be arriving.

For this reason, the Dzorwulu Special School urgently seeks a Speech and Language Therapists to work closely with students who have various levels of speech, communication or swallowing difficulties. As a volunteer therapist in this area, you will be required to assess student needs and problems, and develop treatment programmes which will also involve close relatives of the student e.g. parents, guardians or caretakers. Aside these, your duties will also include:

1. identifying, assessing and treating student developmental difficulties or disorders in speech, swallowing and communication;
2. developing, implementing and revising relevant treatment programmes for students;
3. advising parents, guardians or caretakers of students on the implementation of your treatment programmes and training them in this therapy delivery in your absence;
4. assessing communication environments;
5. etc


Eligibility for above volunteer opportunity:
Preferred gender: any
Age: 18 years and above
Educational background: high school, college or university
Work experience: at least a years experience in a related area above


Skills needed for placement
First and foremost, volunteers must show a strong desire to work with children with mental and behavioural disorders. They should realize that in developing countries such as Ghana, there are a lot of lapses in work. Volunteers will therefore need to be tolerant and flexible in order to meet their goals. Taking initiatives and follow-ups will help them overcome hurdles and face challenges more confidently.
