Description:

A Special Educational Needs Teacher is required to work with students who have mental, behavioural or physical disabilities at the school. As a volunteer teacher in this regard, you will be responsible for identifying student needs and creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment for these special students. Apart from these, your typical duties will include:

1. teaching individual students or small groups of students within or outside the classroom;
2. preparing lessons and exercises to suite individual students or group of students;
3. developing and adapting conventional teaching methods to meet individual needs of students;
4. using special equipment and facilities such as audio-visual materials and computers available to stimulate interest in learning;
5. etc


Eligibility for above volunteer opportunity:
Preferred gender: any
Age: 18 years and above
Educational background: high school, college or university
Work experience: at least a years experience in a related area above


Skills needed for placement
First and foremost, volunteers must show a strong desire to work with children with mental and behavioural disorders. They should realize that in developing countries such as Ghana, there are a lot of lapses in work. Volunteers will therefore need to be tolerant and flexible in order to meet their goals. Taking initiatives and follow-ups will help them overcome hurdles and face challenges more confidently.
