Description:
The Albany Field Office of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) seeks volunteer English Teachers and Tutors to provide classroom instruction and tutoring to our refugee clients.
USCRI Albany Field Office’s ESOL Program aims to provide all our clients with classes appropriate to their proficiency levels. We currently offer several classes a week and are looking for interested volunteers who would like to teach a class of their own, help teach a class or provide tutoring sessions at refugees' homes.
USCRI currently needs additional teachers for our weeknight classes in Albany (Mon-Thurs, 6-8pm). If those times don't work, we encourage volunteers to organize classes at other locations and times in Rensselaer or Albany.
Interested applicants should:
-Have experience teaching English or tutoring, or learning a new language to be sensitive to how adults learn a foreign language
-Be enthusiastic and creative in teaching English to students of different levels
-Be able to teach one 2-hour long class a week, or tutor at refugees’ houses for at least 2 hours a week
-An understanding or interest in refugees, immigrants and human rights’ issues
-Proficiency in another language is desired, but not required. The languages represented in our office are Burmese, Karen, Arabic, French, Swahili, Farsi and Nepali.
ABOUT USCRI
The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants has been helping people flee war and persecution since 1911. USCRI addresses the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life.
Through its network of resettlement field offices and partner organizations, USCRI provides refugees and immigrants across the United States with the support, services and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives and enrich their communities.
The USCRI field office in Albany opened in 2005 and now resettles hundreds of refugee families every year in the Capitol Region of New York State. The largest populations served by the Albany field office are Burmese, Iraqi, Afghan, Congolese, and Bhutanese refugees.
The Albany field office also has an immigration and asylum services program that serves not only refugee clients and their families, but asylum seekers and immigrants from the wider community as well.
