Description:

The Backside Learning Center provides educational services to the people who work with the horses in the barn area of Churchill Downs and Trackside Louisville. The Learning Center currently offers English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL), Spanish, art, citizenship, computer, music, and equine care courses. We also provide, with the help of volunteers, one-on-one ESL and GED tutoring and opportunities for conversing in English.

- Public Relations/Marketing: work with the Public Relations Manager to develop an annual marketing plan; update and maintain the website with the Webmaster; write and distribute press releases; plan, promote and cover Learning Center events.
- Fundraising: maintain donor database; research prospective donors; assist in the creation of new donor appeals and direct mailings; coordinate face-to-face appointments with potential large gift donors
- Community/Donor Education: develop and market workshops, on-site trainings, and multi-media products to be delivered to potential partners and/or donors; seek out and staff public speaking presentations; increase public awareness of the Learning Center programs for the purpose of securing donations; assemble media and donor kits for events and meetings
- Resource Development: develop monthly educational tours that culminate in a year-end breakfast for all tour participants; assist in the development and implementation of earned income strategies; plan and execute fundraising events; identify and solicit new grant opportunities.

Required skills:
- Spanish language skills preferred– read, write, and speak
- Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in small groups
- Independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful, detail oriented
- Computer skills; MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Willingness to learn new skills, flexibility
- Comfortable speaking in public and representing the Learning Center to the community
- Bachelor’s degree required: BA in Spanish, English, Communication, Journalism, Marketing, or related field preferred
- Successful fundraising or grant writing experience is a plus
- Experience with the design, development and production of marketing materials is a plus
- Volunteer must have their own transportation
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be willing to work flexible hours during evenings and weekends

How to Apply:

Interested individuals would be volunteering for the months of March-November 2010.

Availability for training October through November 2009 would be beneficial.
