Description:

Docents at the Louisiana State Museum are highly trained volunteers who enhance the museum experience by interpreting Louisiana's unique legacy and traditions. Passionate about history and culture, LSM docents work to instill in guests of all ages a sense of place in the fascinating fabric that is Louisiana, past and present. As a guide, interpreter and teacher, a LSM docent provides personal contact between the visitor and the exhibits, promotes inquiry-based learning, and works alongside museum educators to foster within the community a love of history, zest for learning, and respect for preservation.

LSM docents assist with:

Student and/or adult tours
Special events and exhibitions
Public programs
Mentoring new docents
LSM docents are asked to:

Attend all training and development sessions
Commit to volunteer for at least a full year
Be available to give both student or adult tours one day per week
Assist with the coordination of public programs

Skills
Although no previous experience is necessary, LSM docent candidates should:

Be enthusiastic about Louisiana's diverse culture and history
Possess good communication skills
Be dependable, with the ability to make a time commitment of at least one year
Be friendly, patient, and enjoy working with people of all ages, especially children
Desire to instill a love of history in young visitors
Be passionate about the preservation of historical and cultural resources
Be willing to participate in monthly ongoing training and professional development workshops. Additional training sessions include field trips, lectures and cultural activities.
