Description:
Participate in the rewarding work of helping a newly arrived refugee family adapt to their new home in the Capital Region.
USCRI invites you to volunteer as a Refugee Mentor, offering your time and compassion to help refugees adjust to American culture, gain self-sufficiency, and connect with the larger Capital Region community. Mentors are paired with a refugee family or individual and help them practice English and learn about their new home in Albany or Rensselaer. Our volunteer mentors typically help refugees learn about the bus system, explore the supermarket, take a trip to the museum, tutor school-age children, and help answer all of the millions of questions that come up for resettled refugees.
Most importantly, mentors become a friend. Mentors meet with their family anywhere from every day to every two weeks. The minimum commitment is two hours per week for 6 months, though many volunteers develop a profound relationship with their family lasting many years.
ABOUT USCRI
The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) is a national voluntary agency that contracts with the federal government to resettle refugees from all over the world in welcoming communities throughout the United States. USCRI Albany has been helping refugees begin new lives in the Capital Region since 2005. Refugees arrive having fled war and persecution, and must quickly adjust to new way of life in the United States. We help refugees become self-sufficient, contributing members of our community who can again dream of a hopeful future for themselves and their children.
Be sure to check out our website: www.RefugeesAlbany.org and contact us with any questions at info@uscri-albany.org or call 518-459-1790.
How to Apply:
